Saying goodbye is never easy

As the seasons change, there are goodbyes and, hopefully, hellos at Cattanach as well: We are saying goodbye to two of our Trustees, Rhoda Reid and Duncan McEachran. The Cattanach Board and Team extend their heartfelt thanks to Rhoda Reid and Duncan McEachran, who both retired from the Board at the Q3 2020 meeting.

Contributions over the last years

Duncan served on the Board for an impressive nine years and has been guiding the full development of Cattanach as a specialised Early Years funder since 2011. During his three-terms serving on the Cattanach Board, Duncan was involved in the distribution of around £4 million to charities working to benefit early years children in Scotland. He contributed greatly to Cattanach’s thinking around accounting, in particular around understanding and appraising reserves positions.

Rhoda joined the Board in November 2016. Her passion for grassroot charities shaped Cattanach grant making, and she was involved in awarding around £2.8 million in grants during her time on the Board. In 2019, Rhoda led a group of Trustees to decide on the Cattanach values of integrity, love, consideration, and hope. Our values are our moral compass and will be guiding all aspects of Cattanach’s work for years to come.

Cattanach Chief Executive, Dr Sophie Flemig, expressed her appreciation for Rhoda and Duncan: “It was both a delight and privilege to work with Rhoda and Duncan. Cattanach has benefited greatly from their dedication and contributions over the years. Being a Trustee is a rewarding but often also demanding task, and Cattanach is grateful for their wise guidance, kind encouragement, and their steadfast ambition to improve the lives of early years children in Scotland for the better. Rhoda and Duncan will be missed by all.”

Could you be our next Trustee?

While these are big shoes to fill, Cattanach hopes to follow on from the success of the last recruitment round in the summer, which saw Heather Coady and Dr Patricia Jackson join our Board. We are particularly looking for new Trustees with expertise and experience in investment management and accounting, ideally with some charity experience, who share our vision of creating better lives through better starts. If you think you could support us on our mission to improve the lives of the youngest children and their families, please get in touch with Sophie (
