The Trust made a grant of £7,873 towards the salary of a Children’s Worker (especially the work with early primary school aged children) in this project in a deprived area of Kilmarnock. The project has a range of activities aimed at children and young people who are at risk of getting into trouble, who have been excluded from other organisations because of behaviour or cost, who have extra needs because of crisis in their lives or who need a positive learning or social experience. Activities include after school clubs, a group for boys with challenging behaviour, an issues-based girls group, a befriending scheme and a full programme of activities during school holidays. They had already secured grants from Lloyds TSB Foundation, BBC Children in Need and the Robertson Trust. The project is very much based in the community and is well networked. The Cattanach Trust is always interested in long-term effects, and liked the policy of maintaining contact with the children through using older teenagers (some with disabilities) as volunteers and buddies. They base their work clearly on need and the relationship with the families is crucial. The project is a good fit, not only because of the age and circumstances of the children, but because the Project staff know about measuring outcomes and are very committed.
