The Cottage Family Centre
Kirkcaldy, Fife.
The Cottage Family Centre's new building was opened, after a huge fundraising effort, in 2005. The ethos and atmosphere is very personal and family-centred, with outreach and support to families in their homes as well as a range of child services, and each child using the centre having a key worker. The Trust made a grant of £9,635 towards outreach to families with 2 and 3 year olds, with the aim of easing them in and leading them on to nursery provision. Support is provided for the parent including parenting classes (Mellow Parenting). The Centre is also used by health visitors for prenatal and new mums groups, which means mothers get to know the staff and the various children's groups and educational activities. There are also drop-in "coffee sessions" to introduce parents to the centre in a non-demanding way. The Trust liked the warm and confidential atmosphere and flexible range of provision for under 4s and their families.
